PHOENIX -- Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes already is comparing Jeff D'Amico to Greg Maddux.
D'Amico won his eighth consecutive decision, giving up six hits in
8 2/3 innings Tuesday night as the Brewers beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 4-3.

"He's been a very dominant pitcher now for nine or 10 starts.
He's been as good as there is in this league," Lopes said. "He
minimizes his pitches. He's very similar to Maddux. He keeps the
ball in play. His pitch count is low. He has command of all of his
pitches. That's the operative word. He pitches."
The comparison seemed to embarrass D'Amico.
"I doubt that," he said. "I'm just trying to throw strikes
and get guys early in the count."
Richie Sexson and Tyler Houston homered for the second consecutive night for the Brewers. Houston had two homers Monday night when
Milwaukee snapped Arizona's seven-game winning streak 16-8.
Jay Bell drove in two of Arizona's runs with doubles in the
third and eighth innings.
D'Amico (10-4), the National League pitcher of the month in July, struck out
five and walked one. He was pulled after Greg Colbrunn doubled with
two outs in the ninth.
Curtis Leskanic relieved and gave up Damian Miller's run-scoring single
before getting his seventh save. D'Amico wanted to stay in to get
his second complete game of the season, but Lopes thought
otherwise.
"He made up his mind before he came out so I didn't have a
chance to talk him out of it," D'Amico said.
D'Amico has a 1.36 ERA in 10 starts since his last defeat May 5.
After that defeat, he was on the 15-day disabled list with
tendinitis in his right rotator cuff.
Since returning, he's 8-0 to break the club record for the
NL version of the Brewers of seven consecutive victories,
set by Steve Woodard last year. The Brewers are 10-0 in games
D'Amico has started since coming off the disabled list.
"He's a pitcher," Miller said. "He's throwing 88 to 92 (mph) and he
throws his breaking ball for a strike. That's all you have to do.
There's a lot of guys out there who don't trust their stuff, and he
trusts his stuff."
D'Amico is a leading candidate for comeback player of the year
after missing all of 1998 and most of 1999 while recovering from
shoulder surgery.
"It was definitely a long road," he said, "but it makes you
appreciate it more now."
Home runs accounted for all four runs allowed by Geraldo Guzman
(3-4), who gave up four runs on six hits in five innings. He struck
out five, walked two and hit two batters.
Mark Loretta singled with two outs in the third, then Geoff
Jenkins was hit by a pitch. Sexson homered to left-center to make
it 3-1, his seventh homer in 21 games since coming to Milwaukee
from Cleveland.
"Richie's been doing that ever since he came over here," Lopes
said. "That's why we wanted him."
After Arizona cut the lead to 3-1, Houston led off the fourth
with his career-high 15th home run of the season.
The Diamondbacks closed to 4-2 after Danny Bautista led off the
eighth with a broken-bat single. He advanced to second and third on
a bunt and groundout, then scored when Bell doubled down the
left-field line. The threat ended when Luis Gonzalez struck out on
three pitches. Gonzalez was 0-for-4 to end his 14-game hitting
streak.
Game notes
Arizona first baseman Erubiel Durazo will undergo season-ending
surgery Thursday to remove a bone chip from his right wrist. He
underwent arthroscopic surgery earlier this season to repair torn
cartilage in the same wrist. ... D'Amico has allowed three or fewer
earned runs in 14 of 16 starts. ... D'Amico singled in the seventh,
only his third hit in 34 at-bats this season. ... The Diamondbacks
will try to salvage the three-game series by sending Curt Schilling
to the mound to wrap up the six-game homestand Wednesday night. ...
Arizona is 3-2 on the homestand, while the Brewers are 3-2 with one
to play on a six-game road trip. ... After the game, Milwaukee
optioned left-handed pitcher Rafael Roque to Triple-A Indianapolis and activated
right-hander David Weathers from the 15-day DL (strained left oblique
muscle).
