Bogar has career-high 5 RBI for Astros

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Eight-year-old T.J. Bogar picked the perfect day to watch his dad play.

With his son serving as the Houston bat boy, Tim Bogar hit two home runs Saturday. Richard Hidalgo and Lance Berkman also connected twice, part of a team-record seven homers that powered the Astros over the Chicago Cubs 14-4.

Bogar, who makes his offseason home in Normal, Ill., and had about 25 friends and family members in attendance, hit a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the fourth.

Bogar's five RBI were a career high. He matched a personal best with four hits.

"It was nice to do that with my son here," said Bogar. "We played catch and I let him experience Wrigley Field the way he should."

It's the 14th time in ML history a team has had three players hit two home runs each in a game, most recently accomplished April 21 when Anaheim did it at Tampa Bay.

"When every fourth guy comes up and hits a home run, it makes it easier," Houston manager Larry Dierker said.

Daryle Ward added a solo shot for the Astros, who lead the NL with 220 home runs. Houston had posted four six-homer games this year.

"It was beautiful," Hidalgo said. "Everyone was swinging at good pitches. If you swing at good pitches, you'll hit it good."

It was only the fifth time in Cubs history they have served up seven in a game, and first since July 12, 1996, against St. Louis.

"We give up seven home runs a day when the wind's blowing out," Cubs manager Don Baylor said, over-exaggerating the totals. "If you can't pitch in this ballpark (when the wind's blowing out), that's the kind of game you'll have."

Sammy Sosa raised his NL-leading RBI total to 130 with a single. But Chicago lost for the eighth time in nine games and was mathematically eliminated in the NL Central.

Hidalgo hit a two-run homer in the third inning and another in the eighth to raise his season total to 35. Berkman hit a three-run drive in the fourth and a solo shot in the eighth.

Bogar's only other two-homer game in the majors came Aug. 14, 1993, at Philadelphia, and his second one in that game was an inside the park home run. He has a career-best six home runs this year.

"He does have power," Dierker said.

Chris Holt (6-15) allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings, pitching despite slight back spasms that started when he was warming up.

Ruben Quevedo (2-8) lost his third straight game. He was tagged for nine runs on 10 hits -- including four homers -- in 3 2-3 innings.

The Cubs also announced that closer Rick Aguilera would be shut down for the remainder of the season because of a broken bone in his right hand. Starter Kevin Tapani will skip the next road trip and may be finished for the year because of various injuries.

Julio Lugo singled to lead off the Astros first and Bogar followed a home run. Hidalgo's homer made it 4-0 in the third.

Quevedo retired the first two batters he faced in the fourth. But then Holt singled, Lugo doubled and Bogar homered. After Jeff Bagwell doubled, Berkman connected to make it 9-0 and chase Quevedo.

Mark Grace hit an RBI single and Damon Buford had a two-run double in the Cubs sixth. Ward homered to lead off the seventh against Jerry Spradlin.
