MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals got contributions from a lot of places Saturday night. Ray Lankford homered leading off the ninth, and Mike Matheny homered and singled twice to pace a 15-hit attack, helping St. Louis edge the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6. "It was one of those total team victories," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "I don't know anybody who played that didn't do something to contribute to the win." For the second straight game, Mark McGwire batted second. He popped out to shortstop in his two-pitch at bat and failed to advance J.D. Drew, who led off with a single. Jim Edmonds followed with an RBI double. McGwire, who was in the lineup at second base, did not take the field. "Knowing how he is, this one at bat stuff is going to get old in a hurry," La Russa said. "But, one is better that none." Milwaukee's Luis Lopez had a two-run homer off Matt Morris in the eighth to tie the game 6-6. But Lankford opened the ninth with his 23rd homer, a solo shot off the fourth Brewers reliever, Juan Acevedo (3-6). Dave Veres came on with two outs in the eighth and held the Brewers hitless for 1 1-3 innings to get the win, but he got some big defensive help from first baseman Eduardo Perez in the ninth. With one out, Jeromy Burnitz walked and was replaced by pinch runner James Mouton. Jose Hernandez hit a rocket toward first that Perez snared and stepped on with to get Hernandez. Mouton advanced to second, but got no further as Raul Casanova ground out to end the game. "That was a game saver," La Russa said. Center fielder Edmonds and right fielder Drew each threw out a runner that kept the Brewers from getting back in the game. In the fifth, Edmonds nailed Richie Sexson and in the seventh, Drew got Geoff Jenkins. Matheny had plenty of time to make the tag on each play. "You got to give those outfielders a tip of the hat," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "They made two perfect throws to the plate and it cost us from winning the ballgame." Cardinals starter Pat Hentgen allowed seven hits in six innings with four walks and four strikeouts. He remained 6-0 in nine career games at County Stadium. The Brewers tied the game at 4 in the fifth on Sexson's RBI double. Matheny's solo home run and Placido Polanco's RBI single off Jimmy Haynes in the sixth regained the lead for St. Louis. Haynes gave up and six runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings. The Cardinals went ahead 4-3 in the third, scoring three runs on five singles and a throwing error by right fielder Jeromy Burnitz. Edmonds and Lankford singled, and Edmonds scored on Fernando Tatis' single. Burnitz's throw to third sailed over third baseman Hernandez and landed in the Cardinals' dugout. Lankford was awarded home and Tatis advanced to second. Edgar Renteria knocked in Tatis with a single. The Brewers took a 3-1 lead in the first on Burnitz's two-run triple and Hernandez's RBI single. Game notesWhen Renteria was caught stealing in the third, it stopped him from reaching 20 steals in a season for the fourth straight time. ... OF Jenkins was back in Milwaukee's lineup after leaving in the third inning of Friday night's game. He had a bruised left forearm after being hit by Rick Ankiel's pitch. ... Polanco started in the field at second for the Cards. Craig Paquette started Friday night's game and committed the ninth-inning error that gave the Brewers a 6-5 victory. ...
