GAME LOG
PHOENIX (AP) -- Rob Ryan watched from the bench as fellow rookie Jason Conti started the Arizona Diamondbacks' game-winning rally. Four batters later, Ryan ended it. Ryan drove home the winning run with a two-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night as Arizona beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2. "Conti's done his job and I just got lucky and did my job," said Ryan, 4-for-11 with two RBI as a pinch-hitter. Arizona won for the fourth time in six games and stayed 4 1/2 games behind New York in the NL wild card race. The Mets beat Milwaukee 4-1 in 10 innings. In a game that began as a duel between Kevin Brown and Brian Anderson, the Dodgers made it 2-all in the ninth on Adrian Beltre's RBI single with two outs off Matt Mantei. Conti led off the bottom half with a bunt single off Terry Adams (6-8) and took second when Matt Williams followed with a single. Danny Bautista then grounded into a double play, with Conti taking third. After pinch-hitter Craig Counsell walked, Ryan batted for Dan Plesac (5-0) and singled sharply up the middle. Plesac earned the victory with a four-pitch strikeout of pinch-hitter Dave Hansen to end the ninth. "That's one of the crazy things about the way this game develops," Plesac said. "Anderson goes out there and pitches his heart out, throwing 100 pitches. Then I go out there, throw four pitches and come out smelling like a rose." Anderson scattered four hits over eight innings for Arizona, which gave him the lead when Jay Bell and Greg Colbrunn each hit solo homers in the sixth. Beltre hit his 18th homer for Los Angeles, which lost for the seventh time in nine games. Beltre's tying single came in the ninth after Shawn Green walked and stole second with two outs. After the hit, Plesac relieved Mantei. Tom Goodwin lined Anderson's first pitch into right field for a single, but the left-hander then retired 18 of the next 19 batters. Green led off the seventh with the Dodgers' second hit, a sharp single to center, but was erased on Gary Sheffield's double-play grounder. "I didn't have my good stuff starting out so I just tried to keep the team in it," said Anderson, who has four straight no-decisions. "Eventually I found out. I tried to go as deep as I could and keep us in the game." Brown was nearly as sharp until running into trouble in the sixth. Bell led off with his 15th home run, and one out later, Colbrunn hit his 13th homer. Beltre pulled the Dodgers within 2-1 when he homered leading off the eighth. Todd Hundley followed with a 100-foot double to right as the ball rolled past Bell and no one covered second base, but pinch-runner Paul LoDuca was stranded. Brown allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter. "We haven't really supported him, but he's been outstanding," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said of Brown. "He had a lot left, but we had to try and tie it." Game notesMantei's blown save was his third in 17 chances and snapped a streak of 12 straight conversions. ... An MRI performed on Arizona CF Steve Finley's injured left hand confirmed what the X-rays taken after Tuesday's game showed: no broken bones. Finley was hit on the left hand below the pinky by Onan Masaoka in the eighth inning of the Diamondbacks' 5-4 victory. He's listed as day-to-day with a deep bone bruise and will be out until at least Sunday. Bautista started in Finley's place and doubled and singled. ... Goodwin's single extended his hitting streak to a team-high 14 games. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Los Angeles Clubhouse Arizona Clubhouse RECAPS Minnesota 7 Oakland 6
