Gagne gets Dodgers past Rockies

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

LOS ANGELES (AP) Davey Johnson is kicking himself for demoting Eric Gagne to the minors after a miserable July.

The Los Angeles manager became convinced the rookie could have worked out his problems with the Dodgers after Gagne beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 Saturday night for his second win in two starts since his recall.

"I was a little on the impatient side with him," Johnson said. "Somebody who has the drive that he has sometimes lets their emotions get in the way, which keeps their natural abilities from coming out. But he's calmer now, and tonight was a good example.

Gagne (3-6) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings, walking two and striking out none. The right-hander had a 9.13 ERA in five starts during July, then spent all of August at Triple-A Albuquerque before rejoining the team Monday.

"He really didn't have his good stuff. He didn't have very good command with his curveball, and his changeup was flat, but he hung around and battled. And he didn't battle himself -- which is a big step in the right direction -- when you can control yourself and keep grinding."

"I was just staying within myself and having some fun," Gagne said. "I'm just trying to get more big-league experience. I trust myself more now."

Antonio Osuna gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Brent Mayne in the eighth inning, trimming the Dodgers's lead to 5-4. But Mike Fetters retired Juan Pierre to end the threat with two men on base.

Jeff Shaw got three outs for his 25th save in 32 chances.

Julian Tavarez (10-4) was charged with four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking three. The right-hander, who won his first five decisions after replacing the traded Rolando Arrojo in Colorado's rotation, has lost his last two starts.

Tavarez took a 3-2 lead into the sixth before hitting hit Shawn Green on the leg and walking Eric Karros, who had two RBIs. One out later, Adrian Beltre chased Tavarez with an RBI single and Chris Donnels followed with a sacrifice fly against Jerry DiPoto, putting the Dodgers ahead 4-3.

Tom Goodwin led off the Dodgers seventh with a single and scored on Karros' sacrifice fly for a 5-3 lead.

Todd Helton, who went 3-for-5, reached the 200-hit mark with a pair of two-out RBI doubles for the Rockies. Helton joined Anaheim's Darin Erstad and Kansas City's Johnny Damon as the only players this season with at least 200 hits.

Helton, who raised his major league-leading average two points to .376, opened the scoring with a first-inning double that followed a two-out walk to Jeff Cirillo. His second double gave the Rockies 3-2 lead in the fifth after a double by Neifi Perez.

The All-Star first baseman's average had nosedived from .397 to .374 during a 16-game span before his home run on Friday night.

"I've just been in a terrible rut lately. It happens," Helton said. "But hopefully, I'll get hot again before the end of the year and end on a good note."

Helton is trying to make Colorado the first NL team with two different batting champions in back-to-back seasons since Pittsburgh's Matty Alou and Roberto Clemente in 1966-67. Larry Walker won his second straight batting crown with the Rockies last season.

Trailing 2-0, the Dodgers tied it on Todd Hundley's RBI double in the second inning and Eric Karros' grounder in the third.
