Colorado rocks Tollberg in 13-4 victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Kevin Jarvis headed for the clubhouse exit intent on throwing a few pitches to his 3-year-old son, Bryce. The toddler couldn't have fared much worse than the San Diego Padres.

Todd Helton drives a two-run homer in the seventh inning, his 36th of the season.
Jarvis, making his first start since July 27, gave up one hit in six innings and retired his final 18 batters Thursday as the Colorado Rockies beat the Padres 13-4.

Todd Helton, Todd Hollandsworth and Terry Shumpert homered to help the Rockies end their five-game losing streak.

"I can't think of a time this year where we needed something more than what Jarvis gave us today," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "That's saying a lot. We've played 152 games."

Starting in place of injured right-hander Pedro Astacio, Jarvis (3-4) allowed the game's first two hitters to reach before finding his groove.

Jarvis, who had made three relief appearances since returning from the disabled list on Sept. 1, left for a pinch-hitter after throwing 58 pitches. He gave up two runs -- one earned -- with no walks and three strikeouts.

"I felt like I was locked in and locating my fastball where I wanted to," Jarvis said. "When you're pitching that well, you want to stay out there, but I did the job they wanted me to do, and they turned it over to the bullpen."

Despite his efficiency, Jarvis trailed 2-1 before the Rockies rallied against Brian Tollberg (4-4) in the sixth.

Hollandsworth tied the game with his 16th homer, and Shumpert followed Butch Huskey's infield single with a two-run shot into the first row of the left-field seats.

"Really it was two different games," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "The first five innings it was normal baseball. Then we let the game just get out of hand."

Jeff Cirillo's RBI double ended Tollberg's day in seventh, and Helton greeted Dave Maurer with a two-run homer as part of six-run outburst.

Helton was 3-for-5, raising his league-leading average to .375. His 36 homers are a career best.

"I've said it 100 times, it's a lot easier to hit when the pitcher's out there throwing well," Helton said. "You get to come back in and you don't have those long periods of waiting out there on the field."

Tollberg, who didn't allow an earned run in his only other start at Coors Field, gave up six runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

"My curveball wasn't as good as it was last time here, but other than that I felt like I did a pretty decent job," he said. "They kept us off balance. They turned the tables on us."

The day started promisingly for San Diego as Damian Jackson doubled on the game's first pitch and scored when Desi Relaford reached on Cirillo's throwing error. Dave Magadan added a sacrifice fly for an early 2-0 lead.

The Padres didn't get another hit until Eric Owens snapped an 0-for-13 spell with an infield single in the eighth.

Colorado pulled to 2-1 in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Cirillo and Helton and Huskey's infield RBI single.

Cirillo had two doubles, giving him 51 as he and Helton (57) became the sixth pair of teammates in major league history to reach the 50 mark in the same season.

"They're just numbers," Helton said. "It's not a huge deal for me. I'm more impressed that we went out and won and didn't get swept here. It's nice, I guess."
