Report: Yankees agree with White on two-year deal

ESPN.com news services

BOSTON -- Free agent outfielder Rondell White has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the New York Yankees, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports.

The deal is subject to White passing a physical and likely won't be officially announced until next week. The Yankees are expected Thursday to announce the signing of Jason Giambi to replace free agent Tino Martinez at first base and don't want another announcement stealing any of that thunder.

White will replace Chuck Knoblauch as the Yankees' left fielder. He hit .307 with 17 home runs and a career-best .529 slugging percentage in 95 games last season with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs and Seattle Mariners were believed to be the other prime pursuers for the injury-prone outfielder.

Other free agent outfielders who had been rumored to have sparked the Yankees' interest included Moises Alou and Roger Cedeno.

White, 29, has played more than 100 games just once in the past four years, although he has hit at least .300 each season. Due to his frequent injuries, White has driven in more than 64 runs just once in his career. He spent time on the disabled list in 2001 with a hamstring injury and missed action in 2000 with hamstring and shoulder problems.

ESPN.com predicts
ESPN's Peter Gammons reports this could be the Yankees' new-look lineup for the 2002 season:

Derek Jeter, SS
Bernie Williams, CF
Jason Giambi, 1B
Rondell White, LF
Jorge Posada, C
Alfonso Soriano, 2B
Shane Spencer, RF
Robin Ventura, 3B
Nick Johnson, DH

The deal for White is the latest move in New York's overhaul of much of the lineup that came within two outs of winning a fourth straight World Series title.

The Yankees acquired third baseman Robin Ventura from the Mets for David Justice last week to replace the retired Scott Brosius, and also signed free agent reliever Steve Karsay.

Outfielder Paul O'Neill also won't be back in 2002 as the Yankees try to upgrade an offense that finished fifth in the AL in runs scored last season.

The Yankees have sought after White since he played with Montreal, considering dealing for him before the 2000 trade deadline.

White is just the second free agent to agree to a contract at this year's winter meetings, joining reliever Jay Powell, who finalized a $9 million, three-year deal with Texas on Tuesday.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
