Game 4: Question of the day

ESPN.com

Before each game of the World Series, ESPN analysts will weigh in on a question of the day.

If you were Bob Brenly, would you start Curt Schilling for Game 4?

Dave Campbell
No way. I am in the minority on this one, but no, I wouldn't pitch Curt Schilling in Game 4. If you have to win two games to get to a world title, and you have two guys you've rode all year who are your main aces, then I think you stick with what has worked. Put another way, this is a classic case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Sure, Schilling is capable on three days' rest, but he'd be better than capable on four. If El Duque comes up with a gem and the Yankees tie up the series and win Game 4, what does that do to the psychology of the Diamondbacks for Game 5? Manager Bob Brenly has already said Randy Johnson would not pitch Game 5 under any circumstances. The Diamondbacks would have to put someone who is not an ace out there for Game 5, risking going down 2-3 and giving all the momentum that comes with winning what would be three straight to the Yankees.

Peter Gammons
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Bob Brenly is in a no-win situation. If he holds Curt Schilling back and Mike Mussina beats Schilling in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium, which Mussina could do, everyone will say Brenly was an idiot for not pitching Schilling in Game 4. But if he lets Schilling pitch Game 4 and Schilling doesn't do well, and then, because he's tired, he loses to Roger Clemens in Game 7, everyone will blame Brenly for pitching Schilling on too few days' rest.

If I were Brenly, I guess I'd say, "What the heck, we're here, and this might be our only chance to win the World Series. Why not go for it and pitch Schilling and Randy Johnson three times in four games and take our shot at winning it." Remember, Schilling doesn't have to throw 97 miles per hour to win. Schilling and Johnson have carried this team so far, to ask them to win two out of the remaining three they could potentially pitch is a fair call. But it is really tough to say. This is an impossible managerial decision -- and it explains why some people manage and some people sit upstairs.

Tim Kurkjian
Absolutely. I would definitely pitch Schilling in Game 4, because that would allow him to pitch Game 7 if necessary. It has been Schilling's idea all along to pitch Game 4 -- he is mentally prepared for this, and he's strong enough to do it. The Diamondbacks can't afford to let the Yankees tie it up, winning two straight. They have to be careful of giving the Yankees any sort of breathing room. If you give the Yankees an inch, they'll take everything. If Brenly puts Schilling out there for Game 4, the Yankees still have to face Schilling twice and Randy Johnson once, needing to win three out of four games. With Schilling throwing in Game 4, it still looks like a good situation for the Diamondbacks.

Of course, virtually every pitcher who has tried to pitch on three days' rest in the past three years has failed. But this is the World Series, and these are the world champion Yankees, and Schilling has given one of the best postseason performances we've seen in a long time. There is no doubt it is a risky move, but it is time to take that risk.
