Scouting Report

1999 Season
Following a 1998 to forget, Tony Phillips used free agency to return to Oakland, where his big league career started in 1982. He provided the savvy and leadership the improving Athletics needed, playing aggressively at second base and center field until breaking his left leg in August.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Phillips is a tireless worker who's fundamentally sound. He uses the whole field and handles offspeed pitches with aplomb, though high fastballs get the better of him. He has moderate power and a knack for getting on base. Phillips is an aggressive baserunner who can steal and take an extra base. He's a competent fielder at nearly every position, though his style of play sometimes leads to miscues and he has a weak arm. He hits better when he plays the outfield.

2000 Outlook
With the Athletics re-signing Randy Velarde to play second base, Phillips' time in Oakland is over. A free agent, he offers versatility, leadership and some speed and power.
