Scouting Report

1999 Season
The term "professional" applies to Mike Stanley at the plate, in the field and in the clubhouse. When he struggled through a .206 July, there was speculation that his bat was slowing. Stanley even was benched for a while, only to come back and hit .333 the last five weeks of the season to lead the Red Sox into the playoffs.

Hitting
Stanley is a situational master. He looks for certain pitches and drives them when he gets them. He has enough power to hit fastballs out of the park to center and right-center, and he turns on breaking balls. He tries to get the ball in the air. Stanley always has hit lefties well, slugging .559 against them the last five seasons. He'll sometimes chase fastballs out of the strike zone and go through periods where he struggles against breaking balls from righthanders. He fights in every at-bat and last season posted a .393 on-base percentage, a key factor in maintaining rallies.

Baserunning & Defense
There was a time when teams considered Stanley a DH and occasional third catcher, a position he left because of chronic shoulder problems. Through determination and hard work, he has made himself a decent first baseman. He has good hands and starts the 3-6-3 double play better than most righthanded throwers. Though Stanley's range is limited, he's very sound on pop flies and moving back along the right-field line. He has the speed of a catcher, but is a very intelligent baserunner who seldom overestimates his ability to get around the bases.

2000 Outlook
Stanley is Boston's primary first baseman and part-time DH heading into 2000. As long as he continues to demonstrate that age hasn't taken its toll on his bat speed, he'll remain in the lineup.
