Scouting Report

1999 Season
Looking for bullpen help, the Athletics signed Doug Jones as a free agent. He performed well and even was promoted to closer following the trade of Billy Taylor to the Mets. After Jones faltered in August, Oakland turned to Jason Isringhausen to finish games.

Pitching & Defense
Jones relies on varying the speed of his one pitch, a changeup, to get hitters out. For the most part, it works. He keeps the ball around the plate, rarely walking anyone. He needs to work often to maintain his touch but struggles when asked to pitch on consecutive days. Jones' motion to the plate is quick, though his utter lack of velocity allows basestealers to get good jumps. He fields his position adequately.

2000 Outlook
Jones was signed to a one-year contract in November as an insurance policy in case Isringhausen struggles. Jones really shouldn't be more than a setup man, so it won't be a good sign for the Athletics if they ask him to close. Though his margin for error is tiny, he continues to hang on.
