Scouting Report

1999 Season
Few fourth outfielders do a better job than Roberto Kelly. He reached .300 for the third time in the last four years while playing all three outfield positions well. Kelly got most of his playing time in center field, where his performance against lefthanders forced manager Johnny Oates to consider platooning him with Tom Goodwin.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Kelly's free-swinging style limits his effectiveness. He managed only 29 walks in two years with the Rangers. But he's a dangerous hitter, especially against lefties. He has the ability to turn on inside pitches and likes the ball down. Kelly makes the plays in all three outfield spots, with center field perhaps his best position. His arm is fair at best and has been slipping, which hurts him as a right fielder. He's an average baserunner.

2000 Outlook
After Kelly became a free agent, the Rangers found a new fourth outfielder by trading minor league righthanders Brandon Knight and Sam Marsonek to the Yankees for Chad Curtis. Kelly would be a good pickup for any team. He understands the mental routine needed to stay sharp when playing two or three times a week.
