Scouting Report

1999 Season
Though he collected a career-high eight saves, 1999 was the worst big league season of Scott Service's career. Expected to reprise his successful setup role from 1998, Service instead often let the game slip away before getting it to the closer. When he was tried as the finisher, Service was equally bad, blowing nearly half of his 15 save chances.

Pitching & Defense
Service throws two pitches hard: a low-90s fastball and a slider. He'll occasionally mix in a splitter or a changeup, but he primarily just tries to throw the ball past the few hitters he's asked to face in each outing. Control has been a problem for Service. He has a durable arm and is able to pitch effectively on consecutive days. Despite permitting 10 steals in 11 tries last year, Service had been effective against the running game in the past. As a fielder he's slow and lumbering, but surehanded.

2000 Outlook
Just when it appeared that Service finally had made it to the majors to stay, he left himself having to battle a host of younger prospects to win a bullpen job. He must prove himself again before getting the ball late in close games.
