Scouting Report

1999 Season
Jim Leyritz didn't hit much for the Yankees after joining them in a July trade with the Padres for pitching prospect Geraldo Padua. Once the postseason rolled around, it was the same old Leyritz. As if for old time's sake, he homered in the World Series against the Braves.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Leyritz doesn't handle righthanders as well as in the past and is moving toward platoon duty. For the first time in his career, he had trouble catching up with the game's hardest throwers last year. Only a catcher on an emergency basis at this stage of his career, Leyritz serves as a backup first baseman and a part-time DH. His speed and defensive ability are negligible.

2000 Outlook
There was a time when Leyritz griped if he wasn't playing on a full-time basis, but he's a reserve now and accepts that role without complaint. After re-signing for one year and $1.25 million, he'll probably open 2000 platooning at DH with Darryl Strawberry. If Leyritz doesn't hit better than he did last season for New York, he'll have trouble keeping that job.
