Scouting Report

1999 Season
After inking a minor league deal before the 1999 season, veteran outfielder Thomas Howard did a decent job in his customary role as part-time player. Getting most of his playing time in right field and as a pinch-hitter, the switch-hitter batted .351 from the right side.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Howard is clearly best suited to be a spot player. He can drive the occasional early-count fastball for power but he always has chased breaking balls out of the strike zone. He clearly was more comfortable against lefthanders in 1999, though he provided five of his six homers against righties. Howard is just an average outfielder. While his arm is now slightly below average, it still remains fairly accurate. Once a solid basestealer, Howard rarely tries to run anymore.

2000 Outlook
Howard became a free agent at the end of the 1999 season. A classic journeyman, Howard usually ends up sticking somewhere because he can provide workmanlike effort off the bench. He also has developed into a decent pinch-hitter who can help a contender.
