Scouting Report

1999 Season
Franklin Stubbs is finally off the hook. Sean Berry officially has replaced him as the Brewers' most disastrous free-agent signing ever. Signed to a two-year, $3.6 million contract, Berry was expected to play first base and provide some offensive punch. Instead, he was a complete washout and was buried on the bench after June.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Berry, who has battled shoulder problems for several years, seemed to have lost all the power from his swing last year. He also was overly tentative and watched many hittable pitches go by. He never had been a burner, and hamstring problems reduced him to half-speed for much of the year. After spending his entire career at third base, Berry struggled with the transition across the diamond. He can catch the ball but must work on learning the position.

2000 Outlook
Always prone to early-season slumps, Berry might have found his groove if the Brewers had shown more patience. But the way he was hitting gave little reason for optimism. Rookie Kevin Barker will be given the first-base job, and the best Berry can hope for is a platoon role.
