Scouting Report

1999 Season
Brian Williams returned from a one-year purgatory in Japan to prove that he still could pitch in the big leagues. He made the club as the long man in the bullpen and pitched respectably. Manager Larry Dierker hesitated to use him in pressure situations.

Pitching, Defense & Hitting
Williams still has the solid stuff that made him a top prospect with the Astros in the early 1990s. He complements a 91-93 MPH fastball with a slider, curveball and effective straight change. The problems with Williams are command and approach. He gets behind hitters and then grooves pitches over the middle of the plate. Though he has gained weight since his prospect days, Williams is an outstanding athlete who once played the outfield for the U.S. national team. He's a quick fielder, controls the running game and is a career .169 hitter.

2000 Outlook
A free agent, Williams may be able to claim a No. 5 starter's job somewhere. He unquestionably has the pitches and physical ability to do so, but never has applied himself mentally or physically to the task. He could be a surprise in 2000, or find himself pitching overseas again.
