Scouting Report
1999 Season Carlos Reyes returned to the Padres over the winter of 1998, signing a minor league deal. For much of the season, he was one of their most effective relievers, but a September slump hurt his numbers.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting For someone who rarely makes it past the mid-80s on the radar gun, Reyes is about as effective as a pitcher can be. This is both a strength and a weakness. Every organization he has been with has found him to be less impressive in person than he is on the stats sheet. He mixes his sinker and slider, painting the corners with precision. When he keeps the ball down and gets groundballs, he survives. He doesn't have much of a move to first but controls the running game with a quick stretch delivery. He struck out in his first major league at-bat last year.
2000 Outlook The Phillies claimed Reyes off waivers soon after the 1999 season ended. Like the Padres and Red Sox before them, they may get decent work out of Reyes but then ultimately deem him expendable.
