Scouting Report

2000 Season
Reid Cornelius was recalled from Triple-A in late May after Alex Fernandez went on the disabled list. Cornelius proved baffling at times, at one point taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Tampa Bay. But his fortunes turned as hitters adjusted to his soft-tossing ways, and he was saddled with the worst run support of any Marlins starter. He was winless in 13 starts after July 2.

Pitching, Defense & Hitting
Once a power-pitching prodigy, Cornelius has adjusted well after elbow problems robbed him of his mid-90s fastball. He now is the rare crafty righthander. The changeup allows Cornelius to handle lefthanded hitters as well as righties. He also mixes in a good curve. He is a solid bunter but not much of a threat at the plate. He does a good job holding runners and played errorless defense last year while taking part in three double plays.

2001 Outlook
A lot would have to go wrong for Cornelius to return to Florida's rotation. He might pitch out of the bullpen but has made just nine relief appearances in the last five seasons, including the minor leagues. Fernandez' health again could factor into Cornelius' fate.
