1999 Season
Brad Rigby had his moments as an Athletics rookie in 1997, but shoulder problems and ineffectiveness kept him out of the big leagues the following year. He bounced back and spent almost all of 1999 in the majors, though he was converted from a starter to a reliever. After joining Kansas City in a trade-deadline deal for Kevin Appier, Rigby had a 7.17 ERA and allowed six homers in 21.1 innings.


Pitching & Defense
Rigby uses his 6-foot-6 frame to generate a low-90s fastball and a hard slider. He also throws a curveball and changeup. He's not a strikeout pitcher, so he has to keep the ball down to succeed. Too often he leaves his hard stuff up in the strike zone and gets pounded. Because of recurring back problems, Rigby hasn't been able to pitch more than a couple of innings at a time. He gets shelled when he doesn't get plenty of rest after an outing.


2000 Outlook
The Royals bullpen was a disaster area in 1999 and Rigby will be one of a cast of thousands the club will try in 2000. He'll get a chance to pitch in just about every bullpen role except closer.
