Scouting Report

1999 Season
After losing his starting spot to injury following a frightening outfield collision with Rickey Henderson in 1998, Jason McDonald didn't even make the Athletics out of spring training. He bounced between Triple-A Vancouver and Oakland three times and was far less productive than he had been in two previous stints with the Athletics.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
McDonald is a good fastball hitter, but he chases breaking pitches and tries to play a power game he's not suited for. He's one of Oakland's fastest baserunners, though his effectiveness stealing bases dropped off last year. A former infielder, McDonald handles himself well in center, charging balls with the mentality of an infielder. He also can play an adequate second base if called upon. His arm is average in terms of strength and accuracy.

2000 Outlook
McDonald has the tools to be a good leadoff hitter or a valuable bench player. After a subpar 1999 performance, his biggest hurdle is finding a team that will give him 400 at-bats. That isn't likely to happen in Oakland after he was outrighted off the 40-man roster in October.
