Scouting Report
1999 Season Claimed on waivers from the Rangers in the offseason, righthander Dan Smith wasn't expected to see the majors in 1999. After pitching decently in Triple-A for the first two months, he was summoned to Montreal and immediately inserted into the rotation. He had a sterling major league debut, striking out nine Red Sox to tie an Expos rookie record. It was all downhill from there, however.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting Smith is a sinker-slider pitcher who doesn't throw especially hard. He must have precise command to get by, but doesn't always have it. He mixes in an occasional changeup. He struggled mightily against lefthanders last year, though he hadn't had that problem in the minors. Smith has a good pickoff move and is tough to run on. He can't hit a lick, though, and is an unremarkable fielder.
2000 Outlook Smith had shoulder surgery during the last week of the season, which may partially explain his late-season struggles. He's expected to be ready for spring training, but needs to find a new club after the Expos non-tendered him in December.
