Scouting Report

2000 Season
Joe Nathan was handed the fifth slot in the Giants' rotation at the beginning of last season and pitched well in stretches. He was especially effective at home, where he recorded a 2.63 ERA. But he went on the disabled list twice due to shoulder problems and threw only 14.2 innings after the All-Star break.

Pitching, Defense & Hitting
Nathan has a power pitcher's build and assortment of pitches. His fastball can touch 96 MPH, and he complements his heat with a hard curveball and workable changeup. His main problem at this point is his command. He has trouble spotting his offspeed stuff and pitches up in the zone too often with his fastball. Originally signed as a shortstop, Nathan predictably is a good-hitting pitcher and slugged two home runs last year. He is agile around the mound and has improved his ability to hold runners.

2001 Outlook
Nathan's shoulder problems did not require surgery and he should be 100 percent this spring. He will go into camp as the favorite to be the No. 5 starter, especially if the Giants don't re-sign veteran free agent Mark Gardner, who took Nathan's spot in the rotation last year.
