TORONTO (AP) _ Kevin Garnett had 17 points and 16 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Toronto Raptors 100-96 Tuesday in the preseason opener for both teams. The game became tense after Charles Oakley knocked Garnett to the floor as the Timberwolves forward went up for a dunk in the third quarter. Garnett followed with nine points and six rebounds in the quarter, but the game was tied at 71 entering the fourth. Joe Smith, whose contract is being reviewed by the NBA for possible salary cap violations, scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. He went 6-for-6 from the line in the fourth, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds. Vince Carter led Toronto with 18 points. Rookie Morris Peterson made a strong impression, scoring 16 points in 20 minutes. Antonio Davis added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Toronto.
