Coach's Edge: Michigan State playbook

Michigan State playbook: Bedrock backcourt

How sweet it is. For the second consecutive season, the Spartans march into the Sweet 16 as the top seed in the Midwest.

A big part of the Spartans' success comes from the backcourt combination of Mateen Cleaves and Charlie Bell, two of Michigan State's famed "Flintstones."

Cleaves is the leader of the Spartans offense. He has the ability to break down the defense off the dribble or pull up and hit the outside jumper.

Bell is an explosive scorer who can play the one or the two guard position. Keep an eye on the Bedrock backcourt.

ANIMATE THIS PLAY DIAGRAM WITH SHOCKWAVE
(A) Mateen Cleaves (12), Michigan State's leading assist man, starts the action with a pass to Andre Hutson (34) on the wing.

(B) Charlie Bell (14) curls around Hutson and sets up behind on the perimeter.

(C) Hutson (34) has an option: Pass to Morris Peterson (42) flashing across the lane, or hit Bell (14) on the backdoor cut.

(D) With the defense playing tight on the perimeter, Hutson has an easy pass to Bell.
