Randle El sparks come-from-behind win

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Quarterback Antwaan Randle El scored three touchdowns and Levron Williams rushed for a career-high 241 yards Saturday, leading Indiana to another come-from-behind victory, 34-17 over Northwestern.

Northwestern (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) led 14-0 after a 75-yard interception return by Harold Blackmon late in the first quarter, but Indiana (3-3, 2-1) did not allow the Wildcats a first down the rest of the half and took control with three touchdowns in the second quarter.

Williams, sweeping to the outside repeatedly on option pitches from Randle El, set up Indiana's first touchdown with a 56-yard run early in the second period. Three plays later, Randle El went in from the 1 for his first touchdown.

On Indiana's next possession, a 55-yard pass to Versie Gaddis set up a 3-yard TD run by Jeremi Johnson to tie the game 14-14. Minutes later, after a Northwestern punt, Williams gained 44 yards on four option runs, and Randle El again scored from the 1 to put the Hoosiers ahead in the closing seconds of the half.

Randle El, the nation's top rushing quarterback, finished with 78 yards on 24 carries and passed for 114 yards.

Indiana, which overcame a 28-7 deficit to beat Illinois 34-31 in overtime a week earlier, fell behind on the opening series against Northwestern. The Wildcats stayed on the ground in a steady drizzle, and a 26-yard run by quarterback Zak Kustok, a transfer from Notre Dame making his first start, took them to the Indiana 24. Four plays later, Damien Anderson ran 4 yards for the touchdown.

Northwestern managed a net 5 yards on its next four possessions, and the Wildcats' only other first-half score came on the long interception return by Blackmon.

Indiana pushed its lead to 24-14 with a 26-yard field goal by Andy Payne early in the third quarter. A 64-yard return by Teddy Johnson on the following kickoff set up a 30-yard field goal by Northwestern's Tim Long, but Northwestern lost a chance to tie the game when a 67-yard TD run by Anderson was called back on a holding penalty late in the third quarter.

The Hoosiers finished the scoring with a 34-yard field goal by Payne midway through the fourth quarter and Randle El's third touchdown, another 1-yard run with 3:12 to go, following a 50-yard gain by Williams.

Williams, a sophomore who was used primarily as a receiver last year, topped his previous rushing high of 168 yards against North Carolina earlier this season.
