Vols lose defensive end before Cotton Bowl

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee defensive end DeAngelo Lloyd is the latest notable college football player to be ruled ineligible for his school's bowl game for academic reasons.

A Tennessee spokeswoman confirmed that Lloyd failed to meet academic standards in the fall semester and will not play for the 21st-ranked Volunteers in the SBC Cotton Bowl against ninth-ranked Kansas State on New Year's Day.

Bernard Jackson will start in Lloyd's place at left end. Jackson started one game this year. Lloyd, a senior, started 10 games and had 21 tackles and one sack.

A new SEC rule requires players to pass six credit hours during the current semester to be eligible to participate in a bowl.

Freshman punt snapper Robert Stolarick and offensive lineman Bernard Gooden also will not play for the Volunteers.

"I'm mad about it and disappointed with the embarrassment that it brings to their families and to them personally," coach Phillip Fulmer told the Knoxville News-Sentinel. "On the other side of the coin, you reap what you sow. They have great help and support here. They didn't take care of business."

Defensive coordinator John Chavis said of losing Lloyd: "We're going to go on, and we're counting on Bernard to step it up and do a tremendous job for us. They pretty much split the work anyway, with Lloyd getting 55 percent of the snaps and Bernard 45."

On Thursday, Mississippi State All-America cornerback Fred Smoot was ruled academically ineligible for the Independence Bowl against Texas A&M. Florida State learned Wednesday that star receiver Marvin Minnis will miss the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma for the same reason.

In addition, wide receiver Reggie Germany of Ohio State will not play in the Outback Bowl against South Carolina because of similar academic problems.
