Remember when your mom rubbed that vapor rub salve on your chest and around your nose? Remember the way your head felt funny and tears streamed down your cheeks and she insisted it was just what you needed? Well, Vick -- and Vick's -- are two entirely different entities, but the effect on Florida State Seminole heads and tear ducts will be similar in New Orleans.

Michael Vick and his Virginia Tech cohorts will bring tears to the eyes of the Seminole faithful early and often in one of the more fascinating matchups of terrific football teams in recent memory. While Florida State has been almost unbeatable during the regular season for the last millennium or so, the huge games have been quite a different matter.

Only once in all those chances have the Seminoles prevailed for a national championship. One reason is that they are so gifted with athletes that there never seems to be the immediate sense of urgency in their performances required to get a fast start. The Seminoles put it in cruise control until the situation is dire enough for them to spring their great skill. Old habits die hard, and they will not have that luxury against Vick.

Three important factors bode well for the freshman phenom. First, he is the leading quarterback in America when it comes to efficiency ratings (highest-rated freshman quarterback in history). Second, Vick is so young that he will find all this attention fun and exhilarating rather than distracting. Finally and most importantly, he is surrounded by a great football team with no stars who will fight to the death of their guts to win this game.

By the time the Seminoles get a whiff of this Vick, it may be too late.

Chris Weinke proved how much he meant to Florida State last year. When a neck injury prevented him from playing in the Fiesta Bowl against Tennessee, the Seminoles couldn't muster any offense and lost the national championship.

Weinke gives the Seminoles the best shot to win because he can throw the long ball to the likes of Peter Warrick. The Seminoles have so much speed at the receiver spot that, by him buying some time, Weinke has a chance to make some big plays against Virginia Tech.

Weinke is a better ballhandler this year and an accurate passer. I'm sure Virginia Tech will try to get Weinke to move around in the pocket because he is an immobile quarterback and a big target. Because he is a dropback-style passer, Weinke may not be effective if the Hokies can make him move.

But I have been impressed with his maturity. At age 27, he is not easily flustered. He has been around, having played six years of minor-league baseball before coming to Florida State. He will often settle the team down in the huddle. His teammates draw from his leadership. Clemson tried to rattle him this season, but in the second half he and his teammates kept its composure and won the game.

Another plus is his physical presence. I have worked a couple of Florida State games this year, and opposing players have said that Weinke, at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, looks like one of the Seminole tackles on the field. Teams have tried to blitz him and bring him down high, but they can't because he is a strong, young man.

Other than a bad, five-interception game against North Carolina State last year, Weinke has been a consistent player, leading Florida State to the national championship game two straight years. A great game from Weinke will earn the Seminoles the national title they didn't get last year.
