This is a clear-out play by Derrick Mason. If they get man coverage, Steve McNair will take a peek at Mason down the field. As always, if the receiver running the go route comes open, the QB will take the shot down the field. This is a good play on first down or on third-and-10.
If the safety turns his back and goes for Mason, the middle is cleared out for Yancey Thigpen running the crossing pattern. If the defense is playing zone, Thigpen will sit down in the hole. In man coverage, he continues crossing and catches it on the run.
This is a long-developing play, so McNair will keep his eyes downfield to give Thigpen a chance to come free. If his vision tells him Mason has gotten open deep, he'll get the ball. If the home run is there for McNair, he'll take it. This is a good long-yardage play.
