Sunday Conversation with John Elway
From ESPN SportsCenter

No quarterback has won more regular-season games than John Elway, but in the biggest game Elway has had a history of bringing out the best in the opposition. In his three Super Bowl losses, the opposing quarterback has claimed Super Bowl MVP honors:
Phil Simms in Super Bowl XXI
Doug Williams in Super Bowl XXII
Joe Montana in Super Bowl XXIV

But Elway took the honors for Super Bowl XXXIII and the freshly minted MVP spoke with ESPN's Andrea Kremer in this week's Sunday Conversation:

Kremer: Did you ever think you would hear Super Bowl MVP describe you?

Before this season, one of the carrots dangling in front of John Elway was becoming the second quarterback to throw for 50,000 yards in a career and the possibility of reaching 300 touchdowns. But Elway came back because he knew the kind of horses he had around him on this team.

Look at the game plan, think about how many passes Elway attempted and don't overlook the quarterback draw at the goal line for the final touchdown. Mike Shanahan wanted Elway to not only win the football game, he wanted Elway to shine and win MVP honors.

The incentive of winning a third straight Super Bowl might be enough to get Elway back. Coming into this game he wanted to do one thing beside win the game: He wanted to shine as a quarterback.

Shanahan's gameplan was worked to perfection, and Elway utilized all the talent he has around him. There were some times that I expected the Broncos to run the football and instead Elway dropped back to pass. That showed me that Shanahan was thinking of Elway.

Elway: No, I didn't. I was just hoping that we would be able to say that we were world champs in Super Bowl XXXIII ... and if the MVP came along with it, that was great. But the bottom line was win it, and thank God we did.

Kremer: Historically, you haven't had your best games in the Super Bowl. You had perhaps the game of your career on Sunday.

Elway: We've got a good football team, and those guys got so much help around me. The offensive line did a great job, gave me the time to throw the football, and a defense that played great.

We played from ahead all day (Sunday), which makes it a heck of a lot easier when you play ahead. All those combinations, great teammates and a great coach.

Kremer: At some point early in the game did you think you were going to have to win it?

Elway: No, I didn't think I was going to have to win it. But I really thought the whole week coming down here that as much talk as there'd been about the running game and all those type things that we were probably going to have to throw the ball to be real successful and move the football and hopefully get some big plays there.

Kremer: When you were speaking after the game, Dan Reeves came over to you. What did he say and what was your feeling at that point?

Elway: Well, that's the first time I'd had a chance to see him since last year. And he just congratulated us, and said, "You played a great game." He asked how my wife was doing and if the family was doing well.

Like I said, there is a great deal of great things that happened when I played for Dan. And those are the ones that I remember and I will always have fond memories of.

Kremer: Is there something a little sweeter for you and for Mike Shanahan since this Super Bowl win came against Reeves?

Elway: No, there isn't. The bottom line is that we wanted to be world champs. It didn't really matter who we played. Our goal at the beginning of the year was to be world champs. Whether it was Dan or the Vikings or whoever it may have been, we're just glad we won the big one.

Kremer: Last year after the Super Bowl, when you went into the shower you told Shannon Sharpe and Ed McCaffrey, "I'm coming back next year." Will you have a similar discussion this year?

Elway: I don't remember saying that. But, no. I'm going to really enjoy this, and sit down and talk to my family. Talk to my Mom and Dad, and then sit down with Mr. Bowlen and Mike and go from there.

But I'm not going to rush it. I mean, I worked too long and too hard -- nine months -- to be world champs, and we finally got that done. I'm going to enjoy that and not worry about next year right now.

Kremer: How enticing is the challenge of being the first quarterback to win three straight Super Bowls?

Elway: It's a big challenge, and it gets tougher and tougher each year, too. I know how much work it was to come back and get the second one. So it will definitely be a lot of work. We'll see if it's in there or not.

Kremer: Your wife Janet told me she thinks she's the minority, but she doubts that you're going to sit it out and retire.

Elway: Well, we'll have to see. She definitely has a lot to do with it because she's the love of my life. So definitely, her view has a lot to do with it.

Kremer: How does this compare to last year's win?

Elway: You know what, Andrea, they're all great. This was a little bit different. The ending was a little bit different. We played with a lead the whole day, and so it was a little bit nerve-wracking because they kind of made a run at us late.

They're all great, and as much work as you put in, they're special.
