Devils spoil the party in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- By sticking to their game plan, Patrik Elias and the New Jersey Devils moved further ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers in the Atlantic Division race.

Elias had a goal and an assist and Martin Brodeur made 30 saves Saturday night as New Jersey won the divisional showdown over Philadelphia 4-1, snapping the Flyers' 15-game home unbeaten streak.

New Jersey now leads Philadelphia by five points.

"We had a good game plan tonight," Elias said. "We stuck with it and played smart and physical. We kept the puck in their zone and tried to force their defense. They have a great offense so it was important for us to keep shooting the puck and going to the net."

Philadelphia, which had gone 12-0-3 during its run, the longest in the NHL this season, played without Eric Lindros, who sustained the third concussion of his career at Atlanta on Friday night. Lindros could be out for up to one week.

"When you're missing your best player and your captain it's going to affect you," Brodeur said. "The Flyers still played a good game. They played hard."

Scott Gomez, Jason Arnott, and Bobby Holik also scored, and Petr Sykora added two assists for the Devils, unbeaten in their last seven road games (5-0-2).

"The Devils were the better team tonight," Philadelphia coach Roger Neilson said. "We got off to a bad start and just never seemed able to recover. They seemed to be really fired up.

"We weren't sharp and we have to play better if we want to beat that team. This was a big game -- a huge game, a four-pointer. This was the showdown and they won it."

John LeClair scored the only goal for the Flyers, who lost their second straight game for the first time since opening the season 0-2. The slow beginning led to Philadelphia's worst ever start at 0-5-1.

LeClair said the Devils always play excellent defense against Philadelphia.

"They stand up at the blue line," LeClair said. "It's tough passing and it's tough getting shots off them. They have real good active sticks and that makes it difficult at times."

Gomez, who leads NHL rookies with 43 points, scored his 13th goal to put the Devils ahead at 3:07 of the first. Gomez lifted a wrist shot from the right circle over the outstretched glove of John Vanbiesbrouck.

Arnott set up New Jersey's second goal at 9:14 of the period. After firing wide on a breakaway, Arnott dug the puck out behind the net and passed it to Sykora, who scored from the front of the crease.

Elias made it 3-0 at 9:41 of the middle period, just one second after the Flyers killed off a two-man advantage. Elias scored from the slot after taking a pass from Sykora.

Holik converted a one-timer from the left circle on a power-play at 1:37 of the third.

LeClair deflected Eric Desjardins' power play point shot and the puck trickled in behind Brodeur at 9:36 of the third for his 25th goal. It was the 46th man-advantage goal for Philadelphia, which leads the NHL.

Both teams had unbeaten streaks snapped by losses on Friday. The Devils' nine-game stretch (7-0-2) ended with an overtime loss at home to Washington, while the Flyers had a nine-game run stopped with their loss to the Thrashers.

"I think the older guys stepped up and said, `Let last night go,' " Gomez said. "Every game is just as important. Whether it's on the road or home, I think we're focusing a little more on everything."
