CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Blackhawks made quick work of the slumping Phoenix Coyotes.

Chicago scored four times in a 6:51 span of the first period en route to a 7-3 victory Sunday that dropped the Coyotes to 1-5-1 in their last seven games.

"I think we came out playing good in the first five minutes, but then every mistake we made ended up in the net," Phoenix coach Bob Francis said. "We made some costly turnovers and didn't get some important stops."

Bob Essensa started in goal for Phoenix, but was replaced by Sean Burke at the start of the second period after allowing four goals on 11 shots. Chicago had only 21 shots overall.

"We're just not playing our style of hockey," Coyotes forward Jeremy Roenick said. "We haven't gone through a slide like this all year and this is a bad time to do it."

Chicago's Tony Amonte had two goals and an assist for the second straight game, and linemate Alex Zhamnov had a goal and three assists as the Blackhawks won for the fourth time in five games.

"At this point in time, the puck is going in for us," said Amonte, who leads the Blackhawks with 34 goals. "You just cross your fingers and hope it keeps going in."

Boris Mironov, Michael Nylander, Josef Marha and Derek Plante also scored for Chicago, and Jocelyn Thibault made 25 saves.

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist and for the Coyotes, and Benoit Hogue and Mika Alatalo also scored.

Chicago led 4-0 13 minutes into the game, despite having just nine shots. But the Coyotes scored twice late in the first period to cut it to 4-2.

Mironov opened the scored at 6:09 with a screened power-play goal from the right point. Nylander made it 2-0 just 44 seconds later. Amonte then scored on a short-handed breakaway and Marha beat Essensa on the short side at even strength.

Goals by Doan and Hogue cut it to 4-2 late in the period, but Amonte and Zhamnov scored in the second period to extend Chicago's lead to 6-2. Alatalo and Plante exchanged goals in the third.
