NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils held their rivals from across the Hudson, the New York Rangers, in check for over 56 minutes. Unfortunately, Devils defenseman Scott Niedermayer woke them up.

Niedermayer's instigator penalty and game misconduct with 4:01 to play sparked the Rangers to a pair of power-play goals and Adam Graves tipped home Theo Fleury's shot 59 seconds into overtime to lift New York to an improbable 3-2 exhibition victory.

New Jersey took what appeared to be a commanding 2-0 lead early in the second period as rookie John Madden and Jason Arnott tallied 21 seconds apart against the lifeless Rangers.

Martin Brodeur stopped all 18 shots over the first two periods, but backup Chris Terreri was unable to stop the third-period onslaught that occurred moments after Niedermayer and Valeri Kamensky engaged in an extended brawl.

Rookie Kim Johnnson got the Rangers on the board with 3:49 to play and Petr Nedved tied the contest just 82 seconds later. Fleury, who assisted on both tallies, got into the act again in overtime.

The sparkplug free agent fired a shot on net from just inside the right faceoff circle that Graves deflected past Terreri to improve the Rangers' exhibition mark to 3-1 and sending the crowd at Madison Square Garden into a playoff-like celebration.

The Devils slipped to 2-2.
