NEW YORK, N.Y. (AP) -- John Vanbiesbrouck has consecutive shutouts, and the Philadelphia Flyers have hope again, thanks to the New York Rangers. Vanbiesbrouck made 20 saves as Philadelphia shut out the Rangers for the second time in three nights, 2-0 Friday night.
"We're still a team that's 3-5-1, and we're trying to do our best," Vanbiesbrouck said. "These are games that are tough to win. You're coming into a tough building to win in." Philadelphia won its first road game in four tries (1-2-1). The Rangers, who were manhandled by the Flyers in Wednesday's 5-0 rout, came out with intensity and showed their mettle by getting into two fights before seven minutes were played. And though both teams left the ice scoreless after the first period, the Rangers felt they made a statement. "I thought in the first period, we played well," Rangers coach John Muckler said. Penalties hurt the Rangers in the second period. Four seconds after killing a penalty, New York gave up the eventual game-winning goal to Daymond Langkow. Defenseman Dan McGillis sent a slap shot from the right point towards the net. Rangers goalie Mike Richter made the save, but the rebound went to Langkow, alone in the lower right circle. He sent a wrist shot under the crossbar at 8:11. Later on, with nine seconds left in another penalty, McGillis scored when he slapped a bouncing puck that dipped between Richter's pads. "The puck came wobbling over to me and I got good wood on it," McGillis said. "Those kind of shots are tough on goalies." Richter, who made 30 saves, had no excuses. "Yes, it did dip, but I still should have had it," Richter said. With a two-goal lead, the Flyers then played a trap system, which bottled up the Rangers the rest of the way, although John MacLean hit the post with a shot 25 seconds into the final period. New York's power-play woes continued. Scoreless in three chances, the Rangers' power play stands at an abysmal 7.8 percent (4-for-51) this season. The Rangers haven't scored at all in over 174 minutes, since Valeri Kamensky's goal in the first period of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to San Jose. When the Rangers have scored less than three goals in a game, they are 0-6-1. New York is 4-0-0 when getting three or more goals. "Theo (Fleury), myself and Petr (Nedved) -- we've got to be on the score sheet 95% of the time," Rangers captain Brian Leetch said. "We've got to be a factor offensively. (The Rangers) have scored one goal in the last three games -- it's not enough."
