NEW YORK (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators looked flat after two periods. But they got going just at the right time.

Patrick Lalime made 38 saves and Chris Phillips scored the game-winner with 5:35 remaining in the third period to give Ottawa a 4-3 comeback victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

Chris Phillips' goal, the third Ottawa tally in the final period, came after Shaun Van Allen sent a pass to the front of the net that Phillips converted for his first goal of the season.

"It feels great to come back like that," said Phillips. "We're capable of winning against any team any night, home or away, when we put our minds to it like we did in the third period."

Down 3-1 after the second period, the Senators still predicted victory in the locker room.

"We've got a good team," Lalime said. "We go out and play hard every shift. We knew we had a chance to win."

The Rangers extended their power-play futility to 0-32 and 4-72 on the season. The game ended with Lalime making a save at the buzzer with a six-on-four Rangers advantage.

"It will cost you a game every time you don't score," Rangers captain Brian Leetch said. "It has hurt us most of the year. Most games, you can point to a specific time that if we got a goal it would help us. It was no different tonight."

Ottawa took a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game when Vaclav Prospal shoveled a pass from Joe Juneau over goaltender Kirk McLean.

Rookie defenseman Kim Johnsson tied the score 1-1 at 16:34 of the first with his first NHL goal. Johnsson broke up the ice on a give-and-go with Theo Fleury, dove for the loose puck in the slot and put it past the startled Lalime, who was distracted by Fleury.

The Rangers took a 2-1 lead at 4:06 of the second period on Eric Lacroix's first goal of the season. Lacroix took a pass from Mathieu Schneider in the slot and whipped a backhand shot under Lalime's glove.

New York extended the lead to 3-1 at 16:37 when Mike York scored his fifth goal of the season when he came up with the loose puck, skated over the blue line and unleashed a slap shot from the right circle that caught the top right corner of the net.

"We let them back in the game in the second period," Juneau said. "That was the worst period we've played since I've been with this team."

The Senators scored twice within 3:16 of the third to tie the score.

Ottawa pulled to within 3-2 on Rob Zamuner's third goal of the season at 4:56 of the third period. Zamuner took a drop pass just over the Rangers blue line from Radek Bonk and his shot just got over McLean's glove.

Magnus Arvedson evened the score at 3-3 when he put a loose puck into the net during a scramble in front of the goal at 7:12 of the third.
