CHICAGO (AP) -- Although Tony Amonte had a goal and three assists for the Chicago Blackhawks, it was teammate Bob Probert who got all the attention.

Probert, a veteran used sparingly this season, had a goal, an assist, and got into a fight for a "Gordie Howe hat trick" in Chicago's 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

"The guys on the team were congratulating me on the 'Gordie Howe hat trick,"' said Probert, who notched his first goal of the season in the second period after pounding Dallas' Grant Marshall in a first-period fight.

"It's been awhile since I had one of those."

Probert's teammates credited him with helping the Blackhawks take charge early and leading them to their third win in four games.

"Probie was great tonight. He was forechecking hard in the first period," Amonte said.

"He works hard," added Doug Gilmour, who had a goal and an assist. "He's always around the net, always banging. It's just a matter of time before he's rewarded."

Michael Nylander and Ed Olczyk -- who scored his first goal of the season into an empty net -- also tallied for Chicago, which won at home for only the third time this season and snapped Dallas' four-game unbeaten streak.

The Blackhawks, who scored on three of their first 15 shots to chase starting Dallas goalie Ed Belfour, improved to 3-10-3 at the United Center.

Sylvain Cote added a pair of assists for the Blackhawks, whose victory over Dallas was only their second in their last 10 meetings with the Stars.

Dallas' Darryl Sydor and Brett Hull scored 2:22 apart late in the second period to allow the Stars to trim Chicago's lead to 3-2. But Dallas didn't score again against Chicago goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

"We dug ourselves a hole and we wasted a lot of energy chasing the game," Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We got outplayed today."

Chicago dominated the first period and took a 1-0 lead at 4:03 when Amonte scored on a one-timer from the slot.

The Blackhawks extended their lead to 3-0 early in the second. Probert scored his first goal in 22 games on a 15-foot shot at 1:03. Nylander swept in a rebound from the crease to make it 3-0 at 6:12 after Belfour stopped Dave Manson's shot from the left circle.

After that goal, Belfour was replaced by Manny Fernandez. The Stars responded to the switch and trimmed Chicago's lead to 3-2 late in the period.

Sydor's low shot from the left point sailed through Jocelyn Thibault with 5:29 left in the second to cut Chicago's lead to 3-1.

Hull narrowed it to 3-2 during a two-man advantage 2:22 later when his shot from the left circle deflected off two players and into the net.

Gilmour added an insurance goal for Chicago at 7:49 of the third when he completed a 3-on-2 break to make it 4-2. Olczyk's empty-net goal with 40.2 seconds left finished the scoring.
