BOX SCORE
FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) -- Kevin Hatcher's third goal of game midway through the third period snapped a tie as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-4, in an exhibition contest. With just under eight minutes left and Carolina on the power play, Hatcher took a pass from Ron Francis at the left point before firing a shot past screened rookie goaltender Evgeny Konstantinov for the eventual game-winner. The goal came just over four minutes after he tied it off another setup from Francis. Hatcher, who signed with Carolina as an unrestricted free agent, scored a power-play goal with 63 seconds left in the first period to forge a 2-2 deadlock. Fellow newcomer Sandis Ozolinsh also had a strong game, scoring a power-play goal and assisting on two of Hatcher's tallies. The offensive-minded defenseman came over in a draft day trade from Colorado for defenseman Nolan Pratt and the 14th overall draft pick. Wayne Primeau scored a pair of power-play goals and Ryan Johnson notched his fifth of the preseason for Tampa Bay. Konstantinov played the entire game and stopped 22 shots. Veteran Arturs Irbe went the distance for the Hurricanes and made 27 saves. Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Keczmer suffered a right knee injury after falling awkwardly into the corner boards. His status is unknown.
