BOX SCORE
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- While Valeri Bure's goal-scoring slump
continued, his two assists were a nice consolation for the Calgary
Flames.
Bure has not scored in 22 games dating back to last season, but
he set up two key goals in the Flames' 3-2 victory over the Boston
Bruins on Friday night.
Bure set up Calgary's second and third goals in the opening half
of the first period against rookie goalie Andrew Raycroft.
"It's nice to finally contribute offensively," said Bure, who
led Calgary in scoring with 35 goals and 40 assists last season,
but had just one assist coming into Friday's game. "That's my
game, trying to create something offensively.
"As long as I'm still getting chances, I'm not too worried."
Jarome Iginla put Calgary ahead 1-0 at 3:20 of the first. Phil
Housley faked a shot as he moved in from the faceoff circle,
drawing Raycroft way out of the net. Housley then carried the puck
behind the net and centered it to Iginla, all alone in front for an
easy tap-in and his third goal of the season.
A little over a minute later, Bure carried the puck out of his
end and into Boston's zone, where he cut to the middle and fired a
shot that was redirected by Shantz in front of the net.
Bure also set up the third goal at 9:07 when he left a drop pass
for Jason Wiemer, who fired a shot into the top corner for his
second goal.
"Valeri had a lot of jump in his step," Flames coach Don Hay
said. "He made two great plays for goals and had several other
opportunities to score himself.
"If he continues to play like that and skate like that, it's
just a matter of time."
Calgary (3-4-0) has won three of its last four games. It also
was the first home win for the Flames, who began the season with
three losses at the Saddledome.
Rookie Samuel Pahlsson got his first NHL goal and Joe Thornton
also scored for Boston (3-4-1), which ended a five-game road trip
with four consecutive losses.
"It's disappointing to struggle the way we have in the last
four games," Bruins defenseman Don Sweeney said. "We had a lot of
positive things happening coming into this trip, but we let some
bad habits creep in like only playing in spurts and not playing the
whole way through."
Friday's game was typical of how the road trip went.
"We got better as the game went on, but we can't expect to give
a team a three-goal lead like we did and come out with the result
we want," Sweeney said.
In the final seconds of the second period, Mike Knuble fed a
pass through the crease to Pahlsson for an easy tap-in.
That goal was the first allowed by Fred Brathwaite in 107
minutes and 56 seconds, dating back to the third period of a
season-opening loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Thornton brought the Bruins within one, scoring a power-play
goal off a feed from Jason Allison at 8:57 of the third period, his
fifth goal of the season.
Raycroft recovered from the rocky start to finish with 27 saves.
Brathwaite stopped 18 shots.
Game notes
Allison has been in on 10 of Boston's 11 power-play goals.
... Bure played his 400th NHL game. ... Bruins defenseman Hal Gill
entered the game with the NHL's worst plus-minus rating at minus
eight.
