What they need
The blueline has become a top priority in Boston with the departure of Ray Bourque and Don Sweeney about to become an unrestricted free agent.

In their system
Last year's first round pick, Nick Boynton (21st overall), battled injuries during his first pro season at Providence (AHL), but did have 19 points in 53 games for the "Baby B's". Another rearguard, Jonathan Girard (48th overall in '98), continued his maturation process at Moncton (QMJHL), with 35 points in 26 games. Another potential blueline prospect is Bobby Allen (52nd overall in '98). He had 27 points and 40 PIM's in 42 games for Boston College (NCAA-Hockey East), but may elect to stay in Chestnut Hill for his senior season.

On the front line, right wing Lee Goren (63rd overall in '97) had a strong season for NCAA Champion North Dakota (WCHA), with 34 goals and 63 points in 44 games for the Fighting Sioux.

Recent draft history
Boston has gone defense (four rearguards and a goalie) with five of their last seven first round selections. The exception was in 1997, when the B's used both of their first round choices that year on forwards (Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov).
