Ottawa Senators

First Round Picks: No. 21
1999-2000 Record: 41-30-11 (2), 95 points (10th overall)

What they need
With Jason York and Igor Kravchuk starting to get up in years and Patrick Traverse dealt to Ana- heim, the Sens may looked to add defensemen to provide depth behind their number-one pairing of Wade Redden and Chris Phillips. Goaltending is also a need, with Patrick Lalime and Jani Hurme all that's backing up soon-to-be un- restricted free agent Tom Barrasso.

In their system
The aforementioned Jani Hurme (58th overall in '97) had a solid year for IHL Eastern Conference Champion Grand Rapids, going 29-15-4 with a 2.18 GAA in 52 games. Also at Grand Rapids, left wing Petr Schastlivy (101st overall in '98) had 16 goals and 28 points in 46 games and earned a call-up to Ottawa during their first round series with Toronto.

Switching back to goaltending, Simon Lajeunesse (48th overall in '99) had a solid campaign for Moncton (QMJHL), winning 31 games and posting a 2.61 GAA in 55 appearances.

Ottawa's top '99 draftee, center Martin Havlat (26th overall), had 42 points (13 G, 29 A) in 46 games for Czech League side Trinec. However, it is thought that he needs to add a little bulk to his 6'1", 178-pound frame.

In the college ranks, right wing Josh Langfeld (66th overall in '97) saw his goal output fall from 21 in 1998-99 to just nine this season at Michigan (NCAA-CCHA), while left wing Chris Bala (58th overall in '98) boosted his totals from five goals and 15 points in '98-99 to 10 goals and 24 points this season while toiling for Harvard (NCAA-ECAC). One more forward line hopeful is center/left wing Chris Kelly (94th overall in '99), who had 29 goals and 72 points in 63 games for the OHL's London Knights.

Recent draft history
The team that calls Canada's capital city home has done its fair share of importing since joining the NHL. Of their eight first round selections all-time, three have been players that were playing in Europe and a fourth, Radek Bonk, was a European playing in the IHL when he was drafted by the Senators.
