Toronto Maple Leafs

First Round Picks: No. 24
1999-2000 Record: 45-30-7 (3), 100 points (7th overall)

What they need
With Bryan Berard's career in serious doubt after his eye injury, a defenseman who is capable of playing both ways and "quarterbacking" the power play could be on the Leafs' list of things they need. A goaltender of the future (Curtis Joseph is 33 and a free agent in two seasons) may also be a priority here.

In their system
A young rearguard who has shown some offensive ability is Jonathan Zion (110th overall in '99). In 66 games for Ottawa (OHL), he had 59 points (7 G, 52 A). Another blueliner of note is Peter Reynolds (60th overall in '99), who split time between London and North Bay (both OHL) in 1999-2000, garnering 32 points in 61 games. Up front, center/left wing Adam Mair (84th overall in '97), who made his Leafs debut with a goal in the '99 playoffs against Pittsburgh, spent his first full season as a pro at St. John's (Newfoundland) (AHL), where he notched 22 goals and 49 points, as well as 124 PIM's, in 66 games. This year's future Leaf who made his Toronto debut in the post-season was center/left wing Jeff Farkas (57th overall in '97). Prior to his pro debut, Farkas starred for Boston College (NCAA-Hockey East), where he had 30 goals and 55 points in 39 games. On the goaltending front, Jamie Hodson (69th overall in '98) had an up-and-down season after recovering from knee surgery at Brandon (WHL), going 13-22-3 with a 3.33 GAA in 39 appearances.

Recent draft history
Toronto's recent draft history has been spotty. Of the last seven Leafs first rounders to play in the NHL, only Nikolai Antropov is still in the organization.
