What they need
With a veteran team beginning to show some age and a forthcoming AHL affiliate in suburban Toledo that will need to be stocked with players, the Red Wings will be needing to stock up on youth.

In their system
Detroit's highest pick in 1999 was the 120th overall selection, which they used to pick center Jari Tolsa, who played for Frolunda in the Swedish League this past season. In 24 games, Tolsa had 10 goals and 45 points, as well as 62 PIM's.

Left wing Ryan Barnes (55th overall in '98) had an up-and-down campaign for OHL Champion Barrie, scoring 17 goals and 29 points in 31 games. Another OHL left wing, Adam DeLeeuw (151st overall in '98) also had a spotty season for Toronto St Michael's, with 11 goals, 30 points, and 107 PIM's in 45 games.

At the AHL level, right wing B.J. Young (157th overall in '97) was the second-leading scorer at Cincinnati with 25 goals and 51 points in 70 games. Young was also fourth on the club in PIM's with 147.

In goal, Aren Miller (52nd overall in '96) saw limited action at Cincinnati (which was a split affiliate of Anaheim and Detroit this season). In just 18 appearances, Miller went 4-10-1 with 3.33 GAA and a .897 save percentage.

Recent draft history
Not the greatest. Of Detroit's nine first round selections in the 1990's, only Martin Lapointe and Keith Primeau (now with Philadelphia) were regular contributors at the NHL level this past season. However, lower round selections such as Darren McCarty (46th overall in '92), Chris Osgood (54th overall in '91), Slava Kozlov (45th overall in '90), Nicklas Lidstrom (53rd overall in '89), Sergei Fedorov (74th overall in '89), and Mathieu Dandenault (49th overall in '94) have all seen regular duty in the Detroit lineup in recent seasons.
