BOX SCORE
SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Red-hot Joe Cannon made six saves and defender John Doyle scored an unlikely pair of goals as the San Jose Earthquakes blanked the MetroStars, 2-0. Cannon, the reigning MLS Player of the Week, has posted shutouts in the last two games, pushing his career total to six in 27 games. He made several outstanding saves in the second half to keep the MetroStars (1-2-0) off the board, stopping a blistering drive by Lothar Matthus from 20 yards in the 71st minute. Doyle opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he found himself unmarked from six yards out on a corner kick opportunity. He easily headed a corner from midfielder Richard Mulrooney past helpless goalkeeper Mike Ammann to make it 1-0. Doyle connected again through the air, heading home a long free kick from Mulrooney in the 31st minute as the Earthquakes built a 2-0 lead. Doyle had never scored twice in his five-year MLS career and had only seven goals in 114 career matches. Alex Comas was able to generate several scoring chances late in the second half but could not get his third goal in as many games. His Colombian frontline partner, Adolfo Valencia, was marked effectively by San Jose's Mauricio Wright. San Jose benefited from the return of top striker Ronald Cerritos, who missed the previous contest while competing in World Cup qualifying for El Salvador. Cerritos' presence allowed creative Khodadad Azizi to move into an attacking midfield role and control the center with rookie Travis Mulraine. Earthquakes midfielder Jimmy Conrad picked up a red card in the 91st minute after making a pair of dangerous tackles. The crowd of 20,824 for San Jose's home opener was the 'Quakes' largest since May 16, 1998. The Metros have dropped both of their road games this season by a combined 5-1 margin.
