PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ A.J. Wood's goal in the 53rd minute broke a tie as D. C. United defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-1, Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Wood collected a cross from Jaime Moreno in front of the net and put a shot past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for his second goal of the season. The victory was just the second its its last 11 matches for D.C. United (5-13-6). Both teams played without star players due to World Cup qualifying, with the Galaxy missing Cobi Jones, Greg Vanney, Mauricio Cienfuegos and Luis Hernandez; and D.C. United missing Raul Diaz Arce and Eddie Pope. United's Pete Marino opened the scoring in the seventh minute, sprinting past Paul Caligiuri and chipping Moreno's feed past an onrushing Hartman.The goal was his first in nine games for United since being claimed on waivers from Tampa Bay May 26. Los Angeles (10-6-7) tied the score 10 minutes later. Peter Venegas intercepted Geoff Aunger's pass, eluded Carey Talley and beat goalkeeper Mark Simpson for his third goal of the season. The Galaxy led 10-8 in total shots, with both teams taking five shots on goal. Simpson made four saves and Hartman three.
