BOX SCORE
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Wendy Palmer scored 21 points and Astou Ndiaye-Diatta matched a career-high with 18 as the slumping Detroit Shock beat the Charlotte Sting 75-72 Saturday night. The victory moved Detroit (12-14), loser of four of its previous five, one game ahead of Washington for the fourth and last playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Rhonda Mapp had a career-high 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Elena Tornikidou added 19 points for the Sting (7-19). Ndiaye-Diatta's impact wasn't entirely positive, though, as she temporarily knocked teammate Dominique Canty out of the game with an accidental elbow to the eye. Canty remained on the bench for most of the second half with ice on the swollen eye. The Shock led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Charlotte pulled within 35-30 at the intermission and as close as one early in the second half. Detroit slowly moved its advantage back to 51-44 with 12 minutes to play, then went on an 8-2 run to move the margin to 13. Tiffany Travis scored the next six points to get the Sting within 59-52, but Tornikidou's three-point play got the lead back to 10 points. Charlotte closed to 66-60, before Palmer hit four straight free throws. Palmer finally hit two free throws with 27.3 seconds left to extend Detroit's lead to 75-68. Mapp hit a 3-pointer as the Shock fouled Charlotte Smith, who made the free throw to cut the deficit to 75-72. After the Shock threw away the inbounds pass, Andrea Stinson's tying 3-pointer bounced off the rim. | ALSO SEE WNBA Scoreboard RECAPS Los Angeles 84 Houston 74
