GAME LOG
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Ray Durham hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Oakland Athletics 7-6 on Friday night. Durham's homer off Mike Magnante (0-1) highlighted the four-run inning that was extended by a catcher's interference call on Ramon Hernandez. With two outs and a run in on Carlos Lee's RBI double, pinch-hitter Jeff Abbott grounded out to second base, but was awarded first base because Hernandez's glove touched the bat on the swing. Durham followed with his second home run of the season to give the White Sox the lead. He had three hits to help the White Sox extend their winning streak to three games. Scott Eyre (1-0) picked up the victory in relief despite allowing Hernandez's two-run homer in the sixth that gave Oakland a 6-2 lead. Heath Foulke pitched the ninth for his first save. Jason Giambi had three hits and drove in two runs for Oakland. He has seven RBIs in four games. Chicago starter Cal Eldred gave up four runs, three hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out six. Oakland's Gil Heredia, who led the AL with 1.53 walks per nine inning ratio last year, gave up four walks, one intentional, in six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and matched his career high with eight strikeouts. Frank Thomas, who has hit safely in his first five games, doubled home a run and Magglio Ordonez drove in another as the White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first. Oakland went ahead in the bottom half on Giambi's two-run double and Ben Grieve's run-scoring, double-play grounder. Grieve's homer made it 4-2 in the fourth. Chicago's Jose Valentin had an RBI grounder in the seventh. Notes: Oakland RHP Doug Jones, currently on the disabled list, threw on the side Thursday and A's manager Art Howe reported everything went well. Jones, eligible to be activated Sunday, might go on a rehab assignment before he joins the A's. ... The A's signed Bo Porter to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento. ... Howe is one win shy of 700. ... Chicago 3B Greg Norton, bothered by a strained left hamstring, was in the starting lineup for the first time this season. He has made two pinch-hit appearances. ... The White Sox are on their longest season-opening road trip (10 games in 11 days). ... Chicago's average age is 26.8, tied for youngest in the AL with Minnesota.
