Mets' 2-run first enough to beat Dodgers

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rick Reed overcame the Mets' early season offensive funk Friday night, allowing four hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings to give New York a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Reed (1-0) threw strikes early in the count and held the Dodgers to four hits and one walk in an efficient 111-pitch outing. The only run he allowed came on Gary Sheffield's solo homer in the fourth inning.

The Mets, who entered the game hitting .193 with 15 runs in five games, gave Reed all the support he needed in the first inning against Darren Dreifort (0-1). Jon Nunnally, filling in for the struggling Rickey Henderson, drew a leadoff walk, and one out later Edgardo Alfonzo also walked.

Mike Piazza, who entered the game 3-for-19 with two RBI, then hit a towering fly to right field that Shawn Green could not track down and fell for an RBI double. Robin Ventura drove in his first run of the season on a groundout to second base.

The Mets couldn't capitalize on Dreifort's wildness. He walked eight and hit a batter in five innings but didn't allow a run after the first. The Mets stranded eight runners and had only one hit in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position, falling to 5-for-46 in the clutch through six games.

Jay Payton, filling in for the injured Darryl Hamilton, flied to center with runners on first and third to end the first and grounded out with the bases loaded to end the third.

The heart of the Mets lineup -- Alfonzo, Piazza and Ventura -- still hasn't gotten started this season. The three are hitting .145 (9-for-62) with six RBI this season after hitting .303 with 332 RBI in 1999.

Armando Benitez got four outs for his second save.
