GAME LOG
SEATTLE (AP) -- Mark McLemore wants to show the Mariners they didn't make a mistake in signing him as a free agent.
McLemore, who hit .274 for Texas last season, singled to center off Mike Holtz (0-1) after David Bell opened the inning with a single, Charles Gipson came in to run and Dan Wilson sacrificed. Seattle won its first 1-0 game this season, while the Angels lost their second 1-0 game. "It felt good," said McLemore, who went 2-for-3 to raise his average to .218. "I've been struggling. But I know my numbers are going to be there at the end of the season, when they need to be." In the top of the eighth, Kazuhiro Sasaki (1-0) walked the first two batters, then got Garret Anderson to hit into a double play and struck out Troy Glaus. Manager Mike Scioscia said he didn't consider having Anderson in that situation. "Garret's role on this club is to hit fifth and drive in runs," he said. "I have every confidence in him being a clutch hitter and a guy who will hit." Seattle loaded the bases in the bottom half, but Jay Buhner ended the inning by hitting into a fielder's choice. McLemore, the Mariners' second baseman, made a running catch in right field on Glaus' shallow fly ball with runners at the corners to end the fourth. With the speedy Anderson on first, the catch saved possibly two runs. "I thought I had it all the way, but I thought I might have to dive for it," said McLemore, who also has played left this season. Darin Erstad, the AL's leading hitter, went 0-for-4 as his average dropped to from .411 to .398. He's 3-for-21 on the Angels' road trip. Seattle starter Gil Meche allowed two hits and four walks in seven innings, striking out five. Meche is 0-3 with a 3.51 ERA in six starts. "I don't want to make a big deal out of the run support," he said. "If this was going to happen all year, yeah, I'd be frustrated. But it's way too early to worry about it." Angels starter Kent Mercker gave up three hits and one walk in five innings, also fanning five.
