MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Even the most successful starting pitchers are disappointed when their bullpen blows a lead and takes away a sure victory.

So imagine how Steve Woodard feels.

Chris Widger's two-out double off reliever David Weathers in the eighth inning scored Terry Jones and gave the Montreal Expos a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, keeping Woodard winless in 16 straight starts.

"He went out and did everything he could to win the game," said Weathers, who has been the best pitcher in Milwaukee's strong bullpen. "I'm the one that lost it. It's a terrible feeling."

Woodard, 0-7 since beating Kansas City 2-0 last July 19, left with a 2-1 lead after seven innings, but Weathers (1-1) allowed four hits and two runs in the eighth. Coming in, he had pitched 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Woodard, 0-4 this year, angrily brushed off reporters' questions as he left County Stadium.

"It's just a shame," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "I wanted to give him a chance to win the ballgame, and I felt it was time to bring in the guy that's been doing a great job for us."

Woodard took a shutout into the seventh before Orlando Cabrera's two-out homer into the left-field corner. Lopes removed Woodard for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, though the manager said he would have let Woodard keep pitching if he hadn't allowed the homer.

"The way Woodard threw the ball today, we knew even though he's 0-4, he can really pitch," Montreal manager Felipe Alou said. "Once he was gone, we got some big hits."

Weathers, who had allowed only one run in 19 appearances this year for a 0.47 ERA, gave up consecutive eighth-inning singles to Jose Vidro, Rondell White and Vladimir Guerrero, tying the game 2-2. Weather had two strikes on both White and Guerrero, but couldn't finish them off.

"When you don't execute, they're going to make you pay," Weathers said. "I didn't do my job."

One out later, Widger's long drive to left brought home Jones, who ran for White. Guerrero was thrown out at the plate when left fielder James Mouton relayed to shortstop Mark Loretta, who quickly threw home.

Montreal relievers Anthony Telford (4-2), Steve Kline and Ugueth Urbina each pitched one perfect inning, with Urbina getting his eighth save in 10 chances.

Milwaukee scored its runs on an RBI single by Loretta and a bases-loaded wild pitch by Carl Pavano, who held the Brewers to four hits in six innings. Loretta's single scored Henry Blanco in the third inning, and Mouton scored on the wild pitch in the fourth.

Milwaukee lost for the 15th time in 19 games and dropped to 2-7 on its 10-game homestand. With two losses to Montreal, the Brewers also lost their seventh consecutive series.

A day after going 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, Guerrero was 2-for-4 but struck out for just the fifth time in 104 at-bats this season.

He was caught stealing in the fourth by Blanco, who also threw out Peter Bergeron in the first. A year after the Brewers finished at the bottom of the majors in stolen bases allowed, Blanco has thrown out six of 13 potential base stealers this year.

Jeromy Burnitz, who went 0-for-4 and fell to 3-for-34 in his last 10 games, grounded out to second in the fifth inning. On the way to first base, he stopped running and exchanged angry words with Pavano, who had thrown inside on the previous pitch.

Montreal first baseman Lee Stevens held back Burnitz, and though the Milwaukee dugout emptied, nothing more transpired. Neither Pavano nor Burnitz had anything to say about the incident, but both intimated that their conflict goes beyond Saturday's game.

With his 110th career save, Urbina moved past Mel Rojas into second place on Montreal's career list. Jeff Reardon leads with 152. ... Jenkins missed just his second game of the season. Only Burnitz has played in every one of Milwaukee's games this season. ... The Expos' pitching staff has issued the fewest walks in the majors this year, but Pavano walked four Brewers. That's the second-highest total by a Montreal starter in a game this year.
