SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Mark Gardner came within two outs of his first shutout in nearly two years and Ellis Burks had three hits and three RBIs as the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Friday night.

Gardner (3-2), who has shuttled between the bullpen and the starting rotation this season, struck out two and walked none while starting in place of the disabled Joe Nathan.

He allowed seven hits and was replaced by Robb Nen after allowing a two-run homer to Henry Rodriguez with one out in the ninth. Nen allowed a two-out homer to Jose Nieves before finishing.

Gardner's last shutout came Aug. 14, 1998, when he blanked Florida 10-0.

Ramon Martinez, inserted into the starting lineup when first baseman J.T. Snow was scratched because of a right eye irritation, homered for the Giants, who have won 11 of their last 13 games at Pacific Bell Park after dropping seven of their first eight games at the new bayside stadium.

Barry Bonds went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, staying hot since his return from an acute back strain last Friday. He has gone 12-for-20 with five doubles and four homers in that span.

Kevin Tapani (2-6) went seven innings, allowing five runs and nine hits. He struck out nine and walked two but the Cubs failed in their bid to win consecutive games for the first time since May 2-3.

The first six batters to face Tapani all reached base via hit or walk, though leadoff batter Marvin Benard was caught stealing before Martinez connected for his second homer of the season.

Bonds doubled and Jeff Kent walked ahead of RBI singles by Burks and Bill Mueller that put San Francisco up 3-0.

Burks added a two-out, two-run double in the fifth.

Notes: The Cubs made a series of roster moves before the game, placing SS Ricky Gutierrez on the 15-day DL and recalling INF Chad Meyers and reliever Matt Karchner from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs also released right-handed reliever Brian Williams and recalled right-handed reliever Tim Worrell. ... Tapani has worked at least seven innings in each of his last five starts. ... Kent, who usually plays second, played first base in Snow's place, and Martinez played at second.
